Zegama-Aizkorri strategy: mastering the Basque mud, tech descents, and crowd energy
An insider layout for tackling Europe's most intense mountain marathon. How to handle the relentless Aizkorri mud, pace the massive climbs, and save your quads for the technical downhills.
Zegama-Aizkorri is 42 kilometers of pure Basque country intensity: 5,472 meters of total elevation change, unpredictable mountain weather, deep technical mud, and a wall of spectators that makes you feel like you are climbing a mountain stage of the Tour de France. It is short compared to an ultra, but it destroys legs twice as fast.
The Mud and Traction Equation
If it rains in the Basque country during race week, the limestone trails transform into a slick, slide-heavy slipway. Choosing the wrong shoe tread will ruin your race before you even hit the major peaks.
- Lug depth: A minimum of 5mm deep, widely spaced lugs is required to shed the wet, sticky clay soil.
- Grip compound: Prioritize sticky rubber outsoles (like Vibram Megagrip) over hard, durable compounds to navigate wet limestone rocks safely.
- Poles vs. No Poles: If the mud is deep, lightweight carbon poles are highly recommended for the steep ascent up Sancti Spiritu, even if you are fast on flat ground.
Pacing the Three Crucial Sections
1. The Aratz Ascent (KM 0 - 16)
The race starts with a fast loop out of Zegama village before grinding up into the forest. The crowd energy will push your heart rate into the red line. Resist it. Keep your breathing steady and controlled until you clear the rocky summit of Aratz.
2. Sancti Spiritu to Aizkorri (KM 16 - 22)
This is the emotional peak of the race. Thousands of fans line this steep, muddy clearing, shouting directly in your face. It is impossible not to hike hard here, but remember: right after the summit of Aizkorri comes a highly technical, sharp ridge line over Aketegi. You need total focus and steady hands.
3. The Quad-Shredding Return (KM 23 - 42)
Once you clear Urbia, the trail drops into a long, continuous technical descent back down to Zegama. If you over-ran the early climbs, your quads will lock up completely on the steep limestone drops. Keep a high stride frequency and step light.
Organize This in Taper
Use Taper to structure your Zegama race playbook. Create an equipment profile specifically evaluating your shoe choices, lug specs, and tire weights. Use the Strategy tab to outline your target split times for the Sancti Spiritu checkpoint, helping you stay grounded when the wild Basque crowd starts cheering you on.
